What makes something a lasting wonder?
The students will be asking themselves what a wonder is to themselves and society and what may be
considered a wonder in the future.
Enduring Understanding:
What geographical historical aesthetic features can make something a wonder?
*Each student group (7 groups each day) will begin the unit by investigating one of the 7 Ancient Wonders, using resources of websites and books to gain information. Each group will be developing a poster containing specific researched information, in order to teach the class about that particular ancient wonder. This activity will start the students thinking about what a "wonder" is to them.
*After discussing the Pyramids at Giza, the only ancient wonder still standing today, the students will be designing shirts using hieroglyphs to represent their names.
*The culminating project for this unit will be a group construction of an "Wonder World" theme park, with each neighborhood representing the "top" wonder in the wonder category chosen by each gifted day. Each neighborhood will have sections including an adult ride, a child’s ride, a restaurant and a gift shop reflecting the “Wonder” category chosen by their gifted class. Items contained in each section of the theme park will be chosen based upon "Consumer Choice". This list will be compiled through the use of the program SKYPE where the gifted classes will be video chatting with their home school classrooms using the Smart Board and their computer. We will be taking note of what their classmates look for the most when visiting rides, restaurants and souvenir shops at a theme park.
