Elementary Gifted Center's 2013 - 2014 Read-A-Thon
Read-A-Thon: PAGE will be sponsoring a student Read-aThon to raise money to support activities at the Joplin Gifted Center. The money will be used to provide field trips. Past field trips have included, the Crystal Bridges museum in Arkansas, the Springfield Little Theater, Silver Dollar City, Discovery Center and Krispy Kreme to study the conveyor belt system. Past funds have also sent the gifted teachers to the National Gifted Conference in Denver, CO and assisted in purchasing 6 ipads for the gifted classrooms. Our goal is to provide the students in the gifted program with opportunities they would not receive in their home classroom, while promoting the love of reading. Research shows that those children who learn to love to read have better test scores throughout their academic career. The Read-a-Thon began this Monday, April 7th! The timeline is as follows:
Week of April 7th - 11th: The kick-off consists of the students setting a weekly reading goal. The students will receive a donation form and collection envelope. Students will have one week to collect donations from family, friends, and anyone who might be interested in supporting the Gifted Center. Donations can be pledged by minute or as a lump sum. Donations may be collected up front and put in the envelope or upon completion of the read-a-thon. NEVER ALLOW THEM TO GO DOOR TO DOOR ALONE PLEASE.
Week of April 14th - 18th: Students will turn in their pledge form and any donations they have collected so far. Students will receive their reading log with their goal. Students will have until their next gifted class to complete their goal. A parent or guardian will sign off on the number of minutes read. Checks need to be made out to PAGE please.
Week of April 21st - 25th: Students will turn in their signed reading log. Students will receive their collection envelopes back for any donations that they still need to collect.
Week of April 28th: Students will turn in their collection envelopes for any remaining donations.
**Prize winners and the winning class will be announced at the Gifted Park Night on Monday, May 5th at 5:30 at Leonard Park.
